Program Description

       Power Lab is a program that provides basic skill development in reading and math, through a variety of research-based activities and techniques.

       Power Lab is a supplement to instruction received in the regular education classroom. Power Lab is funded by USD 207 and ESEA (Elementary Secondary Education Act).

       Students receiving Power Lab services will be provided instruction for 30 minutes per service. Students receiving Tier 3 reading and/or math services will not miss recess or specials.

Eligibility

  • A student must qualify based on a variety of general and formative assessments.
  • The initial recommendation must be approved by the Principal and Impact Instructional Coach.
  • Services are delivered for the length of time required for students to show an acceptable level of improvement.
  • Parents have the right to decline Tier 3 services.
  • Written parent permission is required prior to a student receiving Tier 3 services.

 

Curriculum

         Intervention will vary according to the individual needs of each child. Student needs are determined through assessment data and teacher input.

         Teaching resources may include:

  • Appropriate games, projects, and activities
  • Technology such as iPads, computer programs, and the SMARTboard
  • Go Math
  • Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention
  • Real literature, fiction and non-fiction
  • Explicit phonics instruction using an Orton Gillingham method of instruction (Institute for Multi-sensory Education)

 

Assessment and Placement

         Students in USD207 are carefully screened at the beginning of the school year in an effort to identify those who could benefit from additional instructional support.

         Assessments may include:

  • An Informal Reading Inventory (IRI)
  • Formative assessments in the classroom
  • STAR Assessments through Renaissance Learning
  • EasyCBM (Curriculum-Based Measurement)
  • A Quick Phonics Screener (QPS)
  • Mathematics Grade Level Prerequisite Skills Inventory

 

Parents’ Rights and Responsibilities

 

Parents’ Rights 

  • To receive information about how the program will meet the needs of their child
  • To accept or turn down this addition to their child’s school program
  • To remove their child from this program at any time
  • To be shown all assessments given to their child and receive an explanation of the results
  • To meet with all teachers involved in the instruction of their child
  • To request an assessment of progress at any time

 

Parents’ Responsibilities 

  • Sign and return the monthly envelope
  • Sign and return the quarterly progress report envelope
  • Participate in the Power Lab parent meeting
  • Complete the Power Lab parent survey at the end of the school year
